Windsurfing Canada – PRESS RELEASE – August 17, 2008
2008 CANADIAN WINDSURFING & KITEBOARDING CHAMPIONSHIPS GOES OFF AT SQUAMISH, B.C.
Downwind Slalom was the feature of the 2008 Canadian Windsurfing Championships hosted by the Squamish Windsports Society at Squamish BC.
Veteran West-Coast competitor and Whistler resident Chris Prior is 2008 Canadian Windsurfing (overall) Champion after a tight tie-breaking win over his U.S. rival from Bellingham WA., Andreas Macke. Prior and Macke tied in both downwind Slalom and Formula results, but Prior took 7 bullets over two disciplines versus Macke’s 3 bullets to win the trophy.
The Freestyle Canadian Champion for 2008, Philip Soltysiak of Markham, ON who also finished 4th in slalom, finished strongly in 2nd place overall.
On the first day, the challenging 5-gybe Slalom course at the incomparable newly expanded Squamish Spit site was set by SWS slalom experts and saw fiercely fought action in 9 heats over the day in 15 to 18 knots, with a fleet of 13 entrants including 3 women.
As mentioned, Macke won first place in Slalom, with Rob Mulder winning 2nd and Prior 3rd. With first Youth Philip Soltysiak (taking a break from the world Freestyle Pro Tour) taking 4th place, Fraser Valley competitor Carey Caronni finished 5th while local sailor Kevin Lutz made a strong entry in the 4 afternoon races to come up to 6th.
Chris Prior’s strong Formula results in 6 races in marginal winds over Saturday and Sunday won him the overall 2008 Trophy, Carey Caronni taking 2nd place in the shifty gusts as the traditional strong Squamish thermal winds labored against overcast skies.
Another highlight was Friday’s high-wind Freestyle duel with PWA tour pro Philip Soltysiak from Markham ON beating out strong opposition from local artists Martin Groetsch, Dan O’Sullivan and Brad Russell – some dazzling moves sending spray up onto spectators on the Spit. Local women Shannon-Collier Groetsch and Tanya Ferguson battled to a tie over third place finisher Tamsyn Morote (local girls except for Tanya, from Collingwood ON.)
John Darling representing Windsurfing Canada had the expert help from RC member Harry who motored the West Van YC boat up Howe Sound to take charge of on-water proceedings. SWS President Gary Smith oversaw the whole project with the participation of RC chair Ed Dubois and wife.
The parallel (and first) 2008 Canadian Kitesurfing Championship took place over the same period under the direction of Jean-Michel Tremblay. The Squamish Spit was truly a two-ring circus with boards to windward and kites to leeward, and spectators getting a real close up experience from two directions often simultaneously, though events were generally staggered.
For a report of the inspiring kites events and spectacular non-stop aerial displays, visit www.squamishwindsports.com Windsurfing Canada welcomed this opportunity to co-host a championship in co-operation with a sister high-performance watersport. Kitesurfing race and freestyle (aerial) events are on custom courses to display and test kiting performance skills.
Windsurfing Canada especially notes the contribution of the registration and shore organizing people under the direction of Sandra Bicego of PacificaBlue Consultants. Many volunteers also participated in the event (while Laurie the event Manager who not only lined up most of the event resources and sponsorships but who also recorded all the slalom heats. Major sponsors included Starboard (Trident), DaKine, Roberts Sailboards and a host of local refreshment suppliers. The local newspaper The Chief published a feature article dated August 17 with results and several photos.

2008 CNWKC Volunteers Needed
Submitted by eenglish on Mon, 2008-07-21 12:24.Hi all!
Thanks for responding to our call for volunteers for the upcoming SWS championships! It is going to be a rocking week, starting Thurs night with a Meet and Greet at the Brew Pub, and ending off with a cooelle party at the brew pub on Sunday night. More details on the events to come from Super JM. I attached our poster.
I think there are a few more people who are keen to help, but I don’t have their emails so please send me their contact info or anyone else you know is keen.
The rough break down of help we need is locations crew, race committees (kiteboarding and windsurfing), MC for the competition events, and Thurs night registration. Casey Armstrong is down for this; could use more help here. Laurie may help?
Race committees? Who is keen?
MC/commentator for kiteboarding and MC for windsurfing: who is knowledgable and available? Gary, please again send email out to board and others you may know.
Locations Crew is the main area where we need help; we’ll need a good crew and a leader to oversee the crew. Tasks include:
- Set up barricades
- Create and put up directional signs
- Assign stops to catering
- Fence off areas for spectators, Kiteboarding, windsurfing
- Check on washroom facilities
- Ensure road to spit is clear of traffic; ensure round-about is kept clear
- Garbage – ensure area is kept clean
- Other set up tasks to be discussed
- Take down/clean up of site after event.
All for now!
Any questions, please press ‘reply all’…..
We’ll check in next week with an update.
Super JM may send out another email to this group as I’m away today until July 28th.
Cheers!

SF Bay Access Protected

San Francisco Intl Airport almost killed windsurfing and kiting in south San Francisco Bay. We were windsurfers at heart, but we spoke out as scientists, lawyers, airline pilots, government regulators, real estate developers, frequent flyers, and commuters to fight SFO's colossal 10 billion dollar project.
Big news on SFO airport's attempt to construct unnecessary new runways into SF Bay -- which would have wiped out Coyote Point and most likely 3rd Avenue too*.
A decade of blood, sweat, and tears.
http://forums.iwindsurf.com/viewtopic.php?t=14538
*The popular Third Avenue launch would most likely have been wiped out as well due to massive silting of the shoreline, and a likely 20 year ban on watersports due to constantly moving construction barges throughout the entire area and the massive dredging up of toxic elements from deep in the Bay mud.
